Biodiversity Counts
www.amnh.org/learn/biodiversity_counts
Biodiversity Counts is a middle-school science program created by the American classroom and into the field to study biodiversity at a site near their school. In Biodiversity Counts students will do the same work as scientists at the American Museum of Natural History: make scientific observations, record data and collect evidence, keep field journals, identify and classify evidence, analyze data, publish work for peer review, make exhibitions of work for the general public. The Biodiversity Counts Web site provides students with a national forum to share data, respond to other students' questions and present findings and reports.
Black Smokers From Under the Sea
www.amnh.org/science/expeditions/smp_blacksmokers.html
This site chronicles the adventures of the museum scientists, engineers, and educators as they collected a black smoker sulfide chimney from the ocean floor. This expedition was extremely complex because these massive black smoker sulfide chimneys were under more than a mile of water, weighed many tons, and spewed incredibly hot (400oCelsius/ 750oFahrenheit) mineral-laden water. The study of these submarine structures relates directly to a wide range of Earth processes that include: the transfer of heat and mass from the interior of Earth, the origin and evolution of life on Earth, the chemistry of seawater, the formation of economically important metal deposits through geologic time. Topics: oceanography, biology, chemistry, earth science.
The Bugwood Network
http://www.insectimages.org
More than 5,400 high-quality insect and insect damage photographs, taken by more than 240 photographers, are available in digital format from a  joint project between the Bugwood Network and the USDA Forest Service. Entries in this large collection, known as "Insect Images," are classified by subject, common name, scientific name, life stage, and--where appropriate--host. From the easily navigated website, one can quickly click to the desired target. Up to five levels of resolution for each image are available for downloading and use for educational applications with no royalties or fees required, as long as appropriate credit is given to the source.  The Bugwood Network  http://www.bugwood.org  also offers IPM Images with numerous crop and other broad categories of image, and Invasive and Exotic Species Images.

These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops and the encouragement of intramural, district, regional, state and national tournaments. The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows and athletic games. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications. In addition, during the day there are open house activities which consist of science and mathematics demonstrations, activities and career counseling sessions conducted by professors and scientists at the host institution occurring concurrently with the events.
